Kode9 to release first new album in seven years, ‘Escapology’

The first part of a two-part project from Hyperdub head honcho Kode9 is landing this coming July.

The DJ and producer has today announced his first record in some seven years, ‘Escapology’, a 15-track LP and his first full-length release since 2015’s ‘Nothing’.

‘Escapology’ is the first part of a wider project titled Astro-Darien from the UK producer, an ongoing creative work which has previously debuted at London’s Corsica Studios and later in Paris as a multi-channel diffusion on the 50 speaker Acousmonium.

The multi-disciplinary project has so far encapsulated everything from an audiovisual installation on Scotland’s colonial history to science fiction immersive tales following the character Guna Yala.

The next part of the project incorporates said character, the “lead programmer of a game about Astro-Darien, an orbital space habitat named after the Darien region of Panama.”

‘Escapology’ is the soundtrack to the ‘sonic fiction’ of Astro-Darien, an off-kilter futuristic record set for release on Hyperdub’s sub-label Flatlines.

The record merges “off-world atmospheres into slices of high definition, asymmetric club rhythms”, according to the LP’s description, with use of sound design and meticulous production. ‘Escapology’ is due for release on July 15 with vinyl to follow shortly after.

The announcement of Kode9’s latest record comes hot off the heels of the producer’s recently released ‘C0C’ mixtape created for C2C Festival’s imprint on May 23.

Months prior, Kode9 also launched a brand new publishing company as an offshoot project, Flatlines Press. The project saw the release of a book documenting the sub-label’s pre-pandemic parties held at Corsica Studios.
